According to the latest reports, Jeep plans to bring back one pretty familiar nameplate. A compact SUV that was discontinued four year ago is recently spotted, so we are quite sure that the rumored 2017 Jeep Liberty isn’t just some false alarm, but the real deal. Judging by the speculations, the vehicle will be more soft-road oriented without body-on-frame platform, so yes, the next generation Liberty isn’t SUV, but a stylish compact crossover model. Moreover, the testing model is already spotted, which give us more information about it.
2017 Jeep Liberty: Redesign and Changes
Judging by the spy shots we see, the new generation Jeep Liberty is losing its distinctive boxy shape. Instead, the car manufacturer will add more dynamic to the body, which is rather expected because the compact crossover segment doesn’t “tolerate” anything cubical at all. In any case, the prototype reveals about the same footprint as the Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan, which will be the biggest rivals of the 2017 Liberty. Styling-wise, there is a rounded body style with many curves at both ends. The roof sports more sloping design with chrome roof rail. We can’t see beneath the camouflage, but the SUV will likely have plenty of chromed accents all around. The handsome bodywork will be boosted with a large and striking grille and quite aggressive LED headlights. Both the front and rear bumper should be dominant and pronounced.
We haven’t seen the production ready model yet, so the interior of the testing vehicle could be changed in the meantime. However, the prototype reveals seating for five passengers only and plenty of legroom. The crossover gets a standard steering wheel and a large TFT display, as well as a stand-up touchscreen on the top of the dash. As for the steering wheel, it features a three-spoke design and a big number of buttons, so we think it will handle plenty of driving features and infotainment. The SUV’s hatch seems rather bulging, which makes us to believe that there will be plenty of space in the trunk.
Engine and Transmission Options
Under the hood, the 2017 Jeep Liberty will get a wide range of options. A base unit will be a 1.4-liter MultiAir inline four-cylinder engine that will produce around 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the range-topping model will use a 2.4-liter inline-4 with 180 HP and 175 lb-ft of twist. In case the car manufacturer decides to add an oil-burner option, we can expect to see an amazing 2.0-liter turbocharged mill, which is capable to deliver 138 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The AWD will be available, yet the transmission options will include a six-speed manual, six-speed dual-clutch automatic, and a nine-speed automatic.
Estimated Price and Arrival
The all-new Jeep Liberty will be more urban and luxurious option with rather premium features, so the starting price won’t be positioned low, as it starts let’s say the new Renegade SUV. Still, the first estimates seem promising, because Jeep’s new compact crossover should be priced at around $25,000. The arrival is scheduled for the first months of the next year, but we didn’t get the official confirmation of the car manufacturer yet.
